Corbin’s Animal Garden
October 29, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Presenter: Mary Kronenwetter
In the late 1800s, the banking, railroad, and real estate mogul Austin Corbin returned to his hometown of Newport, NH. He built a grand estate and bought out his neighbors’ farms to create a 22,000 acre wildlife game preserve stocked with boar, bison, bighorn sheep, antelope, elk, and other imported animals. The grounds became a prestigious private hunting park and hosted illustrious guests including President Theodore Roosevelt, the Prince of Wales, and Joe Dimaggio.
The slideshow and talk will include discussion of Ernest Harold Baynes, the park naturalist and the role he played in saving the American buffalo from extinction.
This is a NH Humanities to Go program.
